- If you are 18 or above as of January 1, 2019, you are eligible to vote in the Lok Sabha elections this year.
- There are three types of voters: general electors, overseas electors (NRI) and service electors.
Voter ID Card Registration
You are required to fill From 6 to enrol a new voter and get a voter ID. Anyone who is 18 or above as on the first day of January of 2019 can fill the form. Form 6 has to be submitted to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of the Assembly Constituency, after which you will be included in the electoral roll as a voter. Along with Form 6, you have to submit a passport size photograph and copies of proof of age and residence.
The application, accompanied by copies of the relevant documents, can be filed in person before theconcerned Electoral Registration Officer/Assistant Electoral Registration Officer. It can be sent by post to the Booth Level Officer of the polling area or handed over to her/him.
Voter ID Card Online Registration
You can also apply for a voters’ ID on the Election Commission’s website. You will have to upload Form 6 while applying for a voters’ ID. This page is available in Hindi, English and Malayalam. Here's how:
- Go to the National Voters’ Service Portal - www.nsvp.in
- Click on ‘Apply Online For Registration Of New Voter’
- A new window with Form-6 will open
- Fill up the form and click on ‘submit'.
- One recent passport-sized coloured photograph
- Photocopies of documentary proof of age and residence
You can confirm if you are on the electoral roles and seek details on your registration status by logging into the Election Commission’s website- https://www.nvsp.in/Forms/Forms/trackstatus. You will need to provide your reference ID for tracking.
After receiving Form-6, the Electoral Registration Officer will display a copy of the form on his notice board inviting objections, if any, within a period of one week. The Electoral Registration Officer may also ask the concerned Booth Level Officer to visit the applicant’s residence and verify the information provided in the form. The Electoral Registration Officer will order the inclusion of name in the electoral roll if Form-6 is complete in all aspects and no person has raised any objections.
After receiving Form-6, the Electoral Registration Officer will display a copy of the form on his notice board inviting objections, if any, within a period of one week. The Electoral Registration Officer may also ask the concerned Booth Level Officer to visit the applicant’s residence and verify the information provided in the form.
